Backups Are Not a Strategy Unless You’ve Actually Tested Them

When I ask a new client about their backups, the answer is almost always the same: “Yeah, we have backups.” When I ask when they last tested a restore, the answer is almost always silence.

A backup you have never tested is a backup that might not work. And the worst time to discover that is during an actual emergency.

Why Backups Fail

Backups fail for reasons that are entirely preventable:

• The backup job has been failing silently. Maybe the disk filled up, maybe a credential expired, maybe an update changed a setting. If nobody is checking, nobody knows.
• The data is backed up but the system is not. You backed up your files, but not the applications, configurations, and settings needed to actually use them. Restoring a database without the application that reads it is not a recovery.
• The backup is on the same network. Ransomware encrypts everything it can reach. If your backup drive is connected to your network, it gets encrypted too.
• The restore process takes too long. Your backup works, but restoring 2 terabytes of data takes 48 hours. Can your business survive 48 hours of downtime?

How to Test Properly

Monthly file-level restore. Pick a random file from a random date and restore it. Verify the contents are correct. This takes 10 minutes and confirms that your backup system is capturing data properly.

Quarterly system-level restore. Restore an entire system — a server, a workstation, or a critical application — to a test environment. Boot it up. Verify it works. Document how long it took. This is your actual recovery time.

Annual full disaster recovery test. Simulate a complete outage. Can you rebuild your entire environment from backups? How long does it take? What is missing? This test always reveals gaps, and it is far better to find them in a drill than in a real disaster.
